The SweDance Fiddlers
Lasse Garén lives in Gnesta
abut 70 km southwest of Stockholm in the district of Sörmland.
He started playing folk music more than 25 years ago. Soon he
also started dancing. His favourite musical districts are Uppland,
Hälsingland, Dalarna and Sörmland. He also knows many
"slängpolskor" from Småland and Östergötland.
He is a member of Stockholms Spelmanslag and a small group called
"Gnesta Spelmän". Lasse plays both the fiddle
and the nyckelharpa.
Ann-Marie Pettersson lives in Gnesta southwest of Stockholm.
She has been a dancer since more than 25 years, both "gammeldans"
and polskas. In Gnesta she has been involved in local dance arrangements
as organiser and co-instructor.
Lena Vik Iggendal has her roots
in Åflo/Kaxås in Offerdal, Jämtland in the north
west of Sweden and both on her mothers and her fathers side there
were fiddlers and dancers. She has been dancing since she was
a child and started to work as a dance teacher in various dance
societies already at young age. Over the years she has met elderly
fiddlers and dancers mainly in Jämtland and got influenced
by their old-fashioned way of dancing with close connection to
the local music in a very natural way. Lena is also a experienced
advisor for the old Swedish costumes (folkdräkt) tradition
which is another important part of the Swedish heritage.
Gunnar Iggendal has his roots in Hälsingland a
province in the east of Sweden about 350 km north of Stockholm.
He is a keen polska dancer who received the big Polska medal
already in 1984 and is appreciated for his pedagogic way of teaching
traditional Swedish dances. He works together with the dancers
to find the balance when body, technique, movement and music
harmonize and becomes a nice dance together with the dance partner!
Gunnar is also a fiddler and the leader of the fiddlers group
Stockholms Spelmanslag.
Sture Holmström grew up in
Hälsingland about 350 kilometers north of Stockholm. He
became interested in folk music as a grown up living in Stockholm
and he began playing and also dancing the polskas from different
districts. During many summers he attended workshops in Jämtland
and has many tunes from that area. He is a member and co-leader
in Stockholms Spelmanslag and often makes and plays harmonies
for the group. He is also a member in Täby Spelmansgille
in one of Stockholm's northern suburbs. Together with his wife
Monika he often plays for dance instructions/workshops.
Monika Bylund-Holmström has been playing folkmusic
for more than 20 years. She is a member of Stockholms Spelmanslag
and also in Täby Spelmansgille. Together with her husband
Sture she often plays for dance workshops.
