The New Ole Hendricks Orchestra
Take a trip back in time to a
little dance hall on the prairie with the New Ole Hendricks
Orchestra. This quintet plays music that is preserved in a rare
1890s tunebook compiled by Norwegian-born fiddler Ole Hendricks
(1851-1935). After immigrating with his family to the Driftless
area in western Wisconsin, Ole eventually settled in Elbow Lake in
western Minnesota, an area that was home to many people of Scandinavian
descent. In Elbow Lake, Ole became well-known as a musician, band
leader, and owner of a dance hall. Dancers flocked to his hall on
many a Saturday night to dance quadrilles, polkas, reinlenders, and
waltzes to the music of the Ole Hendricks Orchestra. The New Ole
Hendricks Orchestra has revived this charming repertoire and will
shortly release a CD of a selection of tunes from Ole’s tunebook,
featuring Vidar Skrede on fiddle.
For Nisswa-Stämman, the orchestra’s personnel will include Ann
Streufert (fiddle), Beth Hoven Rotto (piano and fiddle), Amy Shaw
(wooden flute), Chris Bashor (guitar), and David Tousley (bass).
